Report on Yawara 20 Year Celebration Festival activities.

pre release ( check details ) news letter.
Dojo celebrations for Yawara Dojo reaching it's twenty year landmark were held recently with a series of instructors, seminars and demonstrations for all attending Aikidoka.
With well turned out, expectant and high spirited numbers packing the Dojo for each of the four days
of activity, the success of the event was already assured.
The first and second days of the celebration festival were marked with a BAA arranged demonstration
from the Japanese Aiki Assoc head instructor ;
Nariyama Shihan, showing a range of Shodokan Aikido techniques and training methods.
Nariyama Sensei produced displays of some of his powerful self-defence kata ' GO SHIN HO'
techniques, with the help of Phil Newcombe of the BAA.
The third day of the festival was on Saturday and was heralded with Instruction by Dr Lee herself.
Dr Lee examined and instructed on the original format of Tomiki Aikido, as taught to her from Professor Tomiki sensei, Oba sensei and others.
High lights here were ; a refreshing return to the original fifteen techniques as the devised fore runner to today's seventeen techniques contained in the Randori-No-Kata and the Shodokan nineteen technique Randori-No-kata.
Day four on Sunday was under the tutelage of Ken Broome Sensei.
The subject RANDORI
Ken took the day to re-enforce to all levels and countries, the importance of Free Randori play in the Tomoki Aikido system. Noting that to decline activity in free play could only serve to damage your Aikido skills and Techniques.
His views on 'a partnership' in free play and not just self 'honing' alone, to develop good countering
skills, were very valid.
Ken displayed a range of techniques from handgrips, for use in free play and then as per his usual demonic habit, put those remaining on the mats through and hour or so of Toshu Randori..
From our European cousins we then received a demonstration of; Yushiba Aikido, performed by
Eddie Wulpolt and Tim Wulpolt.
A demonstration of some of the Dai Go techniques by Frizt Van
A display of Kendo from
A display of . By .. from Australia.
All were well received.
After a short break, many returned to continue with a second hour or so of ring round fighting of Toshu
Randori. Those present left sweaty tired and content! More should try it!
The final and closing section of the celebrations on Sunday was under the instruction of Dr Lee once again.
Dr. Lee gave instruction on the Shichihon and for those remaining, which were received with much interest from all present.
Many of the Europeans had to regrettably leave by this point to catch ferries to their home destinations and many of the BAA Aikidoka were unable to attend the last day, which was a pity
On the whole the festival was a great success, with many clubs and associations mixing freely
through out.
The Barbecue on the Saturday night was enjoyable ( bar the rain!) and considering the premium fee of 5 paid a banquet! Burgers, chicken, sausages, a salad and even a salmon steak thrown into each
hungry hand!
One regrettable point from the celebration was the unfortunate Missed appearance by Mr Innuei Sensei, which he was forced to miss due to work commitments in Japan.
Inneui Sensei is Shihan to Nariyama Sensei, though no longer a JAA instructor.
This was a loss to us all, Innuei Sensei would have brought with him, invaluable years of experience and knowledge!
Thank you to all that attended and made it a wonderful event.
Special thanks to;
All the head instructors for their teaching.
The BAA for arranging
Nariyama Sensei's Schedule into these dates.
Notably Phil and Jim, the brothers grim!
Dr. Lee for the festival and Wonderful Barbecue.
The European/ Spanish contingents for taking the time and effort to travel over.
Present at the festival;
(In no order of relevance.)
BAA UK division.
EAA. Belgium.

European seminar in Spain with Dr Lee. @ 25-28 September 1998.
Recently Dr Lee visited Malaga on the invitation from the instructors of the Spanish Contingent.
This was a two day seminar on the Di Ni Kata and Competition Tanto Randori, Play and rules/ regulations.
The the first day and part of the second saw the wide range of Di Ni techniques being examined and tested within a small group of eager Aikidoka.
The second day saw all present rigorously taking part in the Randori sessions and taking on the roll of corner judge/ centre judge for the fights.
All heartily agreed that it was much easier to fight than Judge!!!
At the end of the second Day there was a small grading for three Aikidoka trying for their brown belt, a Four Dan grade strong pannel watched the progress of the three.
All three passed, showing thier ability to try to do Aikido with good soft movement and posture, essential for solid Aikido.
Congratulations and continue the good progress.
The Spanish people were warm and took much time to look after us on our stay, including a meal into the early morning hours, on the first day! Needless to say, it was a battle to rise and entertain Randori at first light!!!
The Instructors Miguel and Juan Carlos have warm and friendly team, with great budo spirit.
Any one wishing to visit them and share some training, Please do, you will be warmly recieved and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere to train in.
